2 Weeks on The Atkins Diet

chicken and baby broccoli

My lunch today- plus 1/4 cup macadamia nuts and coffee.

Diet Update: I haven’t had any sugar or carbs for the last two weeks and I still haven’t killed anybody! It’s a freakin’ miracle.

I’ve been really faithful and good about sticking to it so far, the diet is primarily protein and low carb vegetables like salad, broccoli, etc. No corn or wheat at all and definitely no refined sugar (The Devil)!

The truth is, most of the time it hasn’t been that hard, because I haven’t been hungry. The protein/fiber/fat combination really fills you up. I have had cupcake cravings, but so far it hasn’t felt worth it. I want results, man!

This is kinda TMI gross, but I had a stomach flu yesterday that is already better today, but like a psycho dieter I was all “Maybe this will help me lose another pound!” Sad.

I just found out yesterday that even though I’ve been faithful, I probably have still been getting too many carbs daily for what they call The Induction Phase.

You’re supposed to try to limit net carbs to 20 a day (I believe you get to subtract fiber to determine net carbs- so 5 carbs minus 2 grams of fiber is really three net carbs? Something like that.)

It’s really easy to go over 20 net carbs a day! Even if you’re just eating big salads. They say to limit your veggies to around 3 cups per day. So I am starting today with that goal…

macadamia nuts

Macadamia nuts= yummy.

I’m allowed coffee with half n’ half and Spenda or sugar free vanilla creamer, portion control nuts and cheeses (macadamia nuts are very low carb), avocado and healthy fats like olive oil, etc.

I’m eating a lot of chicken and turkey, meat and seafood.

I’m also having a flashback to my childhood and eating those cheese filled hot dogs from Oscar Meyer without a bun- kind of weird and delicious! Pop it in the microwave for 25 seconds- done.

Good low carb veggie choices include: spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, asparagus, cucumber, mushrooms, lettuce and other dark leafy greens (like kale).

I think I’ve lost about 5 pounds in the first two weeks, I’m trying not to obsess about numbers because I want it all to be over and I want it NOW! I probably should start looking at this as a long term lifestyle change though…(I want my cupcakes back. Grrr.)

If there are any Atkins experts out there, I’d love to hear your tips! I’ll keep you posted…I’m going to the BlogHer conference in NYC in August and I want to feel healthy, cute and fabulous.

XOXO-

~ Heidi

Good for you for getting your mind and body healthy. I have not done atkins, but i just went thru the 21 day ultimate reset from beachbody and it was quite the experience, amazing and hard at the same time. I dont want to sell my products on you, but want you to know what i took away from the experience. First of all, everything is mapped out for the you, your 3 meals for the 21 days are all written out, you are given supplements to go along with it, some optimize supplement, a alkaline drink, aka, seaweed, and during week 2 detox drink made from chia seeds. I hated the seaweed drink at first, learned to love it, and man did I learn alot about my eating habits. I dont need nearly as much food as i was eating, and clean eating is so good for the body and soul. I have forever changed my habits, I love to eat clean and the recipes are ones that I will use over and over. Lots of veggies I normally would not have tried, but now loves, ie, beets and fennel. You dont have sugar, and meat is phased out, you get your protein from the greens and quinoa. I had a ton of energy, slept better than i have in a long time, and lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks and have kept it off. I have added some meat back in, but my sugar consumption is way less than before, and i dont miss it. Plus a little added bonus to when you eat clean, your body loves it, and so does your intestines, no bloat! Sorry to go on and on but this was a complete life changer for me and my horrible eating habits! Keep up the good work. http://www.beachbodycoach.com/debraboyden

Deb has been a long time friend to G to M- otherwise I wouldn’t allow a business link/pitch here- so let me know if you try it how it goes for you. I have no connection to it or kickback, to be clear. :-)

I did Atkins faithfully in the past and lost 30 lbs in a month. Which was awesome, but then I slowly started eating carbs again and gained it all plus more right back. So yes it does need to be a lifestyle change which is really hard to do! Once you’re on it for a couple months it gets easier and the missing sugar feeling seems to subside. I did eat A LOT of sugar free jello with whip cream, which I LOVED!!!!

    Good luck Heidi!!!

so to go onto the clean eating theme, tonight, i made southwestern quinoa. Which I know Heidi, you like quinoa, it is a great source of protein and tasted amazing. So i added some fresh corn, black beans, some jalepeno and red peppers, and cumin to the cooked quinoa. Then i added some olive oil, rice vinegar, lemon juice, about 3 tbsp each, some chili powder, then mixed it all together and topped with avocado, yummy! I am loving my new healthy life style, and I hope you are embracing yours too, not only with eating right, but keeping other toxins out of your body. And thank you for posting my ramblings about my new eating habits, which only took me 36 years to get down. We need to nourish our body with our food, treat your body good, and it will treat you right later in life, i hope! Keep swimming!

    The Atkins diet promises that not only will you lose weight — and not be hungry — with a low-carbohydrate diet, but you’ll also be on the road to better heart health and memory function, as well as other wellness benefits.,”-;
